James Turrell Skyspace at Chestnut Hill Friends Meeting

Greet The Light

Chestnut Hill Friends Meeting is a Quaker faith community in northwest Philadelphia whose members built a new meetinghouse in 2013 for Friends, the local community, the Philadelphia region, and all who seek a place for worship and peaceful reflection in our busy world. This “green” building is home to a growing Friends Meeting. It is also home to a Skyspace by contemporary light artist and Quaker James Turrell. This mesmerizing installation has become a sanctuary for all who value quiet contemplation and stunning visual beauty.

The Chestnut Hill Skyspace, Greet the Light, is a permanent art installation designed by Turrell and is part of the Chestnut Hill meetinghouse. A Skyspace is a room created with an opening, or aperture, in the ceiling through which viewers see the sky.

The Chestnut Hill Skyspace features cove lighting that Turrell designed to interact with natural light, thus creating an intriguing and dynamic visual sequence that challenges our perceptions of light, color, and space. Greet the Light is timed specifically to correlate with the rising or setting of the sun, when the light in our natural world changes most dramatically. Every viewing experience is different.

The Skyspace is open to the public at sunset or sunrise at designated times and dates throughout the year, weather permitting. It is not run during Sunday worship services.

The viewing schedule varies with the seasons. It expands during the warmer months when temperature and weather are more favorable.
